A Daira is an informal institution where scholars learn and acquire knowledge in Islamic studies and tradition, figh and Islamic jurispudence, Shariah, philosophy, and the sciences. From Abyssinia to Timbuktu and presently, the Senegambia region we have seen the spread of Daira as a socio-religious activity. Daira as an Arabic term means a study circle commonly called, Dara in the wollof dialect has its emergence in the mid 90s, within the Senegambia community in Britain, and later across Europe. Such Daira's as we know it meet regularly, to perform the Zikrullah, that is; to recite certain verses from the Holy Quran repetitively, with certain formula in the remembrance of Allah (Subhanna Wat-Ta'allah). The formation of Daira's have been very helpful and instrumental in the way cross-section of Muslims from The Gambia and Senegal conduct and handle some basic humanitarian needs within and outside their community. It has become part of our daily life, a way to seek and acquire knowledge and understanding of the Islamic religion and the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW). The Reading and translating the Qur'an, and Ahadith also should be in the centre of a Daira's activities.

Such group meets regularly and perform their Islamic duties and obligations, also partake in religious observances.
